The Dark Tapes is a found footage horror film anthology. Its main particularity is the way its three segments and its wraparound story intertwine. This is not an easy movie. Don't blink or you'll get lost. It’s hard to keep up with the segments’ asynchronism, but it pays off, in the end, and makes the film fun to revisit. Think V/H/S but more unified, more layered and with more mindfucking.
“To Catch a Demon” is the wraparound story. Divided as it is, it is hard to keep up with but it is very, very creepy. “The Hunters and the Hunted”, second story, is Paranormal Activity with a twist. The third story is called “Cam Girls”. It is heavily composited and it’s the sexy one of the bunch. It paves the way for the most fantastic tale; “Amanda’s Revenge”, about a girl with psychic powers
This anthology is heavily altered in post-production and most of these edits are very effective. The monster design is extremely powerful. We never know exactly what beasts we’re dealing with. The characters rarely call them by name. Sure, the script is confusing, at times, but, on the other hand, when it comes to instigating mystery and terror, the writers deserve a serious round of applause.
